Beauty Camp Break throughs | SU Western Cape

Most of the 23 girls at the SU Western Cape’s Beaury Camp were aged 17years and older and came from areas such as Du Noon, Khayelitsha and Langa. Despite cold and wet weather the first two days the camp went smoothly. The girls were a tough bunch to get through to and the leaders found it very challenging to build deep connections with the campers.

The campers were very reluctant to share and speak up about their lives and walk with God. One of the youngest campers was a true transformation story. When she arrived, she was completely closed up, physically as well. She refused to show her face. On Wednesday we had a photo shoot which was very exciting for the girls. We had a professional photographer come in and take the pictures. This girl refused to be part of the photo shoot and even refused to leave her room. After much fuss and persuasion, the other campers “dolled her up” and did her hair and makeup and gave her a dress for the photo shoot! It was heart-warming to see how the other girls rallied around her in support. She eventually had her picture taken and even managed a smile for the camera.

Another camper celebrated her birthday on the Tuesday of camp. At breakfast everybody stood up and sang the birthday song for her. We had hardly started singing when she started crying. She couldn’t contain herself and sobbed the whole song through. Seeing her cry broke our hearts as leaders. The following day I found out it was her 21st birthday! A few days ago I received a message from one the leaders saying that she has kept in contact with some of the girls and the feedback has been awesome! Many of them have been waiting for something from God and they are seeing it come into fruition now. Many of them have also said they feel challenged to change their lifestyle and habits and follow Christ. As challenging as the camp may have been for us leaders, God is always in control and we can rest assured that the seeds have been planted!
