The Training Department is in creative mode! A team of staff and volunteers, called the “Holiday Club Crew” have been getting together since last year to put together our holiday club programme. The theme is “Mission: Unstoppable!” and it follows the story of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt under the leadership of Moses. The children who attend the club will be encouraged to investigate God’s unstoppable mission, from the beginning of time, to save His people once and for all. It has been great fun working on all the aspects of the programme with some really gifted children’s workers and seeing it come together. We are even hoping to get the whole programme translated into Afrikaans and possibly even Zulu before July (if we can find translators… Any volunteers?). The English programme will be available from SU offices, bookshops and the online bookstore in April.
We also have a bold long term goal in the Training Department to get our SU training materials accredited with a SETA. This has been a dream in SU for many years, but understanding the process and then meeting all the requirements (which seem to change on a regular basis) looked like an impossible task for an organisation that is not already set up as an academic training institution, and it seemed that we hit a brick wall at every turn. Finally a door has opened that could make our dream a reality! It involves a partnership with “Extreme Life”, which is an academic trust with a vision to become a fully-fledged training institution offering programmes provided by like-minded organisations (e.g. SU, UCSA, Christian Camping SA etc.). UCSA has already been creating training materials that are aligned to unit standards (this is vital in order to accredit training) and they are able to help us. Extreme Life is looking for organisations that will pool resources in order to provide the best possible training in youth ministry. So we are keen to get on board. Watch this space…
